To insert page numbering, use the Page Number drop down – you don’t even have to have the footer or header active to do this, as you can choose from Top of Page, Bottom of Page, Page Margins or even the Current Position of your cursor/insertion point. In most cases though, you should find that the Built-In footer options in the Insert > Footer menu are enough. As with the header, you can alter the size of the footer, and even insert an alignment tab. To access the Footer, either double-click the space just above the bottom of the page or go to Insert > Footer to choose an automatic footer style. Word 2010 features a variety of page number formatting options, and you can use the steps here to include page numbers in the header. Just as important as styling your header in Word, footers can be used to display a variety of information, particularly page numbers. Simply double click the displayed placeholders to enter the text you wish to include, or use the Quick Parts drop down on the Header & Footer Tools Design tab. Using the example above, the three column header provides three spaces to enter information which will then be repeated on every page in the document. In your Word document, go to the Insert tab, and click on the Header button – use the drop-down menu to choose your preferred header format. My favourite is the three-column header which allows you to enter, for example, the date, the title and the author’s name. If you would prefer to use a pre-formatted header, several are included in Word. Here, simply use the alignment tools in the Paragraph section to position the date as required.
You can change this alignment by changing from the Header & Footer Tools Design tab that activates when you’re in the header and instead going to the Home tab. This will drop the date into the header of your document, left aligned by default. If you would like to enter the date or time, click the Date & Time button while in the header, and choose one of the many display formats. This will take you directly into the header, and allow you to enter text, images, date and time and even adjust the size of the header. To access the header directly, double click in the area of the page above the text. These are particularly useful elements to add to documents such as reports and books, and by default they appear on every page in the document. Ultimately, however, you might intend to add page numbers to your page footers, or add title and author information to the header. You might wish to right-justify a section of text, particularly useful it you are writing a letter (you can do this by selecting the lines of text that comprise your address and clicking the Align Text Right button or pressing CTRL+R) or you might like to add the data and time or even insert a Blank Page or Page Break (both available on the Pages section on the Insert tab). If you’re working on a Word 2010 document, chances are there is more to be done than simply typing a load of words and sentences on the page.
